Who We Are

Our Story

Bringing the heart of Ethiopia to Indianapolis since 2015

The restaurant

A Taste of Home, Shared with Indianapolis

Axum Ethiopian Restaurant was born from a passion for authentic Ethiopian cuisine and a desire to share that culture with the people of Indianapolis. Opening in 2015, we set out to create a space where the communal traditions of Ethiopian dining could be experienced by everyone — regardless of their background.

Named after the ancient city of Axum — one of the great civilizations of the world — our restaurant honors the rich history and culinary heritage of Ethiopia. Every dish we serve is a tribute to that legacy.

Authentic Recipes, Imported Spices, Made with Love

We use spices and ingredients imported directly from Ethiopia to ensure every bite is as authentic as possible. Our berbere, mitmita, and other spice blends are prepared using traditional methods, giving our dishes a depth of flavor that can't be replicated.

Ethiopian cuisine is naturally one of the most inclusive in the world — our menu features an extensive vegan and vegetarian selection, making it a favorite for all kinds of diners. And of course, everything is served on our hand-made injera.

Community dining

Food is Community

In Ethiopian culture, sharing a meal is an act of love. The tradition of gursha — placing food in another person's mouth — symbolizes deep friendship and hospitality. We bring that spirit into every visit.

Whether you're celebrating a special occasion, meeting friends for lunch, or simply curious about Ethiopian cuisine for the first time, our doors are always open and our table always welcoming.
